About Kristie
Kristie Wolfe built her first tiny house in 2011 as a social experiment in living simply and deliberately. What was intended to last a year ended up becoming a permanent move. From there, she has handcrafted one of a kind experiences like her treehouse in Hawaii, an underground hobbit hole in Washington, a fire lookout in the Idaho Panhandle, and even a potato hotel in her hometown of Boise.
In 2017, Kristie and her brother Sam were able to save a 100-year-old barn and turn it into Idaho’s premiere wedding venue located in Nampa, Idaho. She is currently working on her first single family build in Salmon, Idaho and has another one coming up in Lakeside, Oregon.
Kristie launched a video course for aspiring Airbnb hosts called ‘Superhost School’ where she gives students the tools and information to host their own 5-star experience now available for free on Youtube or Tiktok.
The Big Idaho Potato Hotel
Boise, Idaho
The 6-ton spud that travelled across the country to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Idaho Potato Commission was gifted to Kristie in 2018. Kristie transformed this 28-foot long, 12-foot wide, and 11.5-foot tall concrete and plaster shell into a plush potato-shaped palace. The Big Idaho Potato Hotel was planted in an expansive field in South Boise with views of the Owyhee Mountains. Now, the iconic tuber is the 5-star darling of Airbnb.
The customized silo-turned-spa features a fireplace, soaking tub, and glass skylight, perfect for stargazing. The property also comes with a Jersey cow, named Dolly, to give your farm stay an added dose of cuteness.
The Tropical Treehouse
Fern Forest, Hawaii
Included in Airbnb’s Top Ten “Most Wish Listed” places to stay in the world, this personal island paradise in the sky allows travelers to enjoy solar powered off-the-grid living without sacrificing any of the comforts of normal life. Kristie bought the land, sight unseen, for $8,000. She and her mom built this secluded treehouse 15-feet in the air using strap winches to hoist the wood beams inch-by-inch into place.
Nestled in a canopy of local flora, you enter through a trapdoor and enjoy a 360 degree view of the lush jungle from the wrap around lanai. Natural light floods the house while bamboo fixtures, vintage wallpaper, and white accents give the space a cloud-like aura.
The Hobbit Inn
Chelan, Washington
For Kristie’s next build, she wanted to do something completely different in design, construction, and terrain. She didn’t know much about hobbits in The Lord of the Rings, but she did love their cozy underground homes. Her attention to detail would make Tolkien proud.
She gave her house a character in which to design around. In this case, that took the form of a carpenter hobbit. Kristie painstakingly crafted wood archways, laid a cordwood floor, and retrofitted a wood tub!
The Hobbit Inn is the most wished for place to stay in the state of Washington and most guests wait over a year for the opportunity to live like hobbits for a few days.
Crystal Peak Lookout
Fernwood, Idaho
Kristie’s passion for recycling is most evident in this beautifully restored 1950’s fire lookout. Completely rat infested when Kristie bought it, the structure is now a gorgeous 14X14 square foot fortress of solitude 25 feet in the sky overlooking 13-acres of pristine Idaho forest. Kristie’s most expensive property to date at $67,000, this exquisite and remote location is a homage to the historic and vital role fire lookouts once played in the American Northwest.
The property includes a sauna, made from an old shed, with a bucket shower. Kristie also restored a 1964 Thikol Snowcat so that guests could enjoy the lookout in the winter months -- hot cocoa bar included.
The Cocoon Cottage
Lakeside, Oregon
Kristie really wanted to try a prefab build. She fell in love with this hut manufactured in Estonia. After traveling to Lakeside with a friend she new this would be the perfect setting for the structure. You can arrive via boat or car. There is a outdoor tub, dock and sauna.
The Shipwreck House
Salmon, Idaho
Nestled along the beautiful Williams Lake, the Shipwreck House is a captivating abode where hidden treasures await discovery. Kristie transformed this old Shipwreck home from the 1900’s. She was excited to create a family unit filled with adventure. A private dock extends from the house, offering a perfect launching point for aquatic adventures, while the legend of pirates, lost loot, and a treasure map invites guests to embark on a thrilling treasure hunt.
